The Codington County Highway Department staff is responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of all facets of the County Highway system including road surfaces, signs, bridges, culverts and drainage systems on approximately 190 miles of asphalt surfaced roads, 203 miles of gravel roads and 42 bridges. The Highway Superintendent must approve all bills associated with county road maintenance before payment. Payment for work on county road systems is made from the county road and bridge fund.

Snow Removal

The Highway Department maintains the following equipment for snow removal:

Watertown:
(1) Motorgrader with V-plow and wing
(7) Plow Trucks (4 with sanders)
(2) snow blowers

Kranzburg:
(1) Motorgrader with V-plow and wing

Henry:
(1) Motorgrader with V-plow and wing

Florence:
(1) Motorgrader with V-plow and wing

Florence:

PUBLIC NOTICE: Right Of Way

South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL 31-32-7)

DESTRUCTION, ETC., OF HIGHWAY GRADE OR DITCH

VIOLATION AS MISDEMEANOR.

No unauthorized person may injure any highway by removing, destroying, or otherwise altering the grade constructed for such highway or by filling, obstructing, or otherwise altering the ditch which drains the grade of such highway or otherwise injures such highway in any manner. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

This shall include tilling or planting of crops within the Road Right of Way. Because the Right of Way varies from property to property please contact the Codington County Director of Equalization for additional information @ (605) 882-6274.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that any destruction or injury to a County Road, ditch or Right of Way may result in legal action by the County to enforce the law. This may include mowing of the crops, silt, or debris removal, and grade reconstruction. The cost to the County for these repairs may be assessed to the landowner or person responsible.

IN THE INTEREST OF MOTORIST SAFETY

The Codington County Highway Department asks for your cooperation in the removal of hay, straw, or other bales and obstruction from within the right of way of Codington County roads in a timely manner. Bales or other obstructions remaining within the right of way after October 15th may be removed or disposed of by the Codington County Highway Dept. Costs associated with the removal of such items may be assessed to the landowner or person responsible.

LANDOWNERS WHO ARE RENTING THEIR LAND OUT, PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR TENANTS TO AVOID POSSIBLE VIOLATIONS.

CONTROLLED BURNS

The Board of Codington County Commissioners strongly recommends a call to Watertown Dispatch @ (605) 882-6210 whenever a property owner/renter intends to conduct a controlled burn in Codington County. Your call could prevent false alarms and unnecessary response of emergency equipment to a controlled burn.
